"The sky was lit up with flames when our company was bombed at night near Verdun, France. We became covered with debris from delayed bombs while sleeping in our pup tents."

1. Some funny things I remember about the war:

Not funny-but unforgettable. Seeing young girls with their heads shaved, bundles of hair scattered on the streets, in France. This was their punishment for fraternizing with the German soldiers.

2. My memories of the way we lived in Europe:

From the time we invaded France via the Normandy area, we slept on the ground, under vehicles, in fox holes, and in evacuated German homes. Our meals were cooked outdoors on a small gas stove-on the ground-or set in the back of a vehicle. Mess kits were used for cooking bacon, boiling water, etc. We traveled in jeeps, weapons carriers, and armored vehicles.

3. My most vivid memories from World War II:

The sky was lit up with flames when our company was bombed at night near Verdun, France. We became covered with debris from delayed bombs while sleeping in our pup tents.

4. My memories about the conditions of the countries I was in during the war:

Most of the homes were evacuated. We used the homes to sleep in. We saw few civilians.

5. Something from the war that is difficult to talk about, but I'd like future Americans to know:

We saw many dead bodies both German and American lying frozen. We saw truck loads of dead Americans being taken away. German bodies were left lying in the streets.

6. In spite of the hardships of war, I'm proud to have served my country in World War II because:

I feel it is our patriotic duty to serve in the military for our country.

7. My message to my lifelong buddies in the 818th:

It is always an interesting experience to attend reunions: to see different parts of the USA, especially to get in a "home town" atmosphere. To meet couples from the different areas. Hope we can keep in touch. Many have done so much, plus some of our children have added much with their help.
