John T. Nupp Sr., 89, a resident of Greene Township, died unexpectedly on Thursday morning May 15, 2008 at the Manchester Presbyterian Lodge. A resident of the Erie area most of his life, he was born in DuBois, Pa. on October 25, 1918 a son of the late Thomas and Mary Christian Nupp. John worked at the General Electric for 33 years and retired in 1980. Previously, he had worked as a coal miner and for the Civilian Conservation Corp. He was an avid hunter and a gardener. He was an Army veteran of WW II serving with the 818th as a tank commander in Patton's Third Army in the European Theater. He participated in the campaign's of Central Europe i.e. Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and the Ardennes. One of his greatest pleasures was attending Army reunions of the 818th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He served as a guard at the Nuremberg trials.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years Veda Goughnour Nupp whom he married on May 29, 1948; two sons, Dennis Nupp and his wife Mary Beth of McKean and John Nupp, Jr. and his wife Kathy of Girard; a brother, Herb Nupp and his wife Jean of Harborcreek; a sister, Louise Hulsman of Shelbyville, Ind.; five grandchildren, Julie Evans, Corey, Rebecca, Emily and Lauren Nupp and a great grandson Samuel Evans. A number of nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Don, Frank, and Ralph Nupp. Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, 5000 Wattsburg Road, Erie, corner of East Gore Rd. and Pine Ave., Sunday 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to services there on Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. officiated by Rev. Patricia A. Fuller. Burial will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association, 1030 State Sr., Erie, 16501. .
