"Was the Battle of the Bulge. We did not think we were going to make it through this difficult battle. Also, Utah Beach (France) was a quite vivid experience because it was filled with much anxiety and pain."

1. My Wartime nickname:

Mitch

2. My memories of the way we lived in Europe:

We slept in the woods most of the time. Sleeping under a jeep was very popular. We would eat the rations distributed by the Army. They were not that tasty, but we had to eat whatever they had available.

3. My most vivid memories from World War II:

Was the Battle of the Bulge. We did not think we were going to make it through this difficult battle. Also, Utah Beach (France) was a quite vivid experience because it was filled with much anxiety and pain.

4. My memories about the conditions of the countries I was in during the war:

Very, very poor conditions. Children and civilians were poor and had barely anything to eat.

5. Something from the war that is difficult to talk about, but I'd like future Americans to know:

The sight of truckloads of dead men being carted away from the various invasions and battles. These men died for the country and the freedom we have and live for today.

6. In spite of the hardships of war, I'm proud to have served my country in World War II because:

We fought for a good cause-Democracy and Freedom for the U.S.A. Communism was defeated as a result of the U.S. and Allied victories.

7. My message to my lifelong Buddies in the 818th:

The war was hell, but I am glad and proud to have served our country with all of you. We truly share a special bond, one that can never be broken. Thank God that we made it home safely, but we need to remember our buddies who did not. May God bless America.
